Should there be a mandatory retirement age for Federal employees?
Some employees stay in their jobs for well past 40 years. Some have actually received a certificate of recognition for 50 years or more of service. While it may be appear commendable, you have to wonder about the quality of service that is being provided to the public. After all, Federal employees are public servants who administer the benefit programs to the public. The quality of service has to be affected by deteriorating mental and physical capacities.

- I think they maintain the poor level of service their entire careers. There are some Senators that need to be put out to pasture.
- There should be very few Federal employees . Thats the problem is one third of the workers in this country are employed by the government .
- humm it appears that there should be more concern for the younger federal workers! I hear that today, federal employees are not required to pass certain tests as were required years ago. And why should they. Thanks to high technology, computers correct misspelled words, provide calculators, etc. You have some GS-15's etc making plenty of money for doing certain types of contract work. On the other hand you have some GS-15's doing little or nothing. Anyway, Government has always always been slow! That's because they have two 20 minute breaks a day; they take an hour or more for lunch; they are always taking two hour "birthday celebrations" for someone who works with them. They amass hundreds of hours of vacation time, personal time and sick timel They don't lose this time. If they don't use it, they are paid for it. They work overtime for any reason or no reason at all. They take advantage of free telephone service. In reality they spend more time gushing over federal 'benefits' than they do working. You wonder why it takes so long for returning veterans to receive needed and EARNED benefits? That's because govenrment workers take their own sweet time. It's not that these benefits cannot be taken care of timely. It's more that there are plenty of just plain lazy government workers who don't really care. The entire federal govenrment system needs to be overhauled.
- There are mandatory retirement ages for federal employee's.
- There shouldn't be any federal employees.
- Why? They still suck on the tax payer teat after they retire! Must be nice to get a government sponsored check every month ala taxes. Any government employees keep recieving tax money until the day they croke, even if they "retire" at 40, OH NO! But they are no "welfare queens"!
- What ever happened to hiring and firing people based on performance. Reasons for not hiring: Female Married Single Too old Too young Black White Immigrant Gay English is the second language From the south From the north Bald Fat Handicaped Under qualified Over qualified Folks. We are at 4.5% unemployment even in the face of outsourcing. It has never been lower and will likely never get lower. We don't have enough people to fill the jobs we have. Please stop coming up with reasons to cut people out of the labor pool. It's economic suicide.
- I think there is mandatory retirement age, isn't there? Time served should have nothing to do with it. Besides, any military service counts toward their time, so conceivably a person could enlist at 18, and after retiring from the service at 20 yrs, then work another 30 years and still be only 68. BTW, I know a number of government workers who do a very good job with the limited funds they receive to do their jobs. Again, a question just meant to slam a group.
