What courses or certificates can improve my Resume?

I am currently reviewing my resume as I am changing jobs and although I have quite a few certificates and participation awards for volunteer work that I did in High School ( when I had the time) I have nothing for almost the last decade. I didn't get any written references because I always added the people that could vouch for me as verbal references but I want to have some written documents as well just to add a little more to my resume. I would like to do more tests or short courses that can help impress future employers that would show what I am, hard working and community spirited. Does anyone have any ideas of any online things or community things I can do without spending little to any money? I am going into nursing and have finished certificates that qualify me as a nurse but in general what are some ways that you have improved your resume?
