Why do people get Certificates Of Achievement over Degrees? I want to attend college in Spring of 2009. I live in San Jose, CA and we have many community colleges out here. I want to attend online classes with West Valley College and I notice that they offer both Certificates of Achievement as well as Degrees. My question is why would someone go out for a certificate and not a degree? Also, do they only offer job placement for individuals with degrees of education or do they offer placement help for students with Certificates in chosen fields? Please help, I'm having such a hard time deciding on what I want to go out for. I really don't want to spend more than 2 years getting educated and I can only do online classes and I'd much rather go for a vocational certification or degree, whichever is possible.

Does anyone see a problem with a principal giving cash incentives to students for doing well in school? I am a teacher in an urban school in SC. My principal gives out $10 cash incentives for students who make the honor roll, do well on tests, etc. The problem that it has caused, which he does not see, is that the other awards given to students for achievement (like certificates and ribbons, like we had in school) hold no weight anymore. Students just complain that they didn't get any cash and they don't want a "stupid certificate". I am on track to becoming an administrator myself and was wondering from any experts, or non-experts out there what they thought of this. I'm interested to hear your responses. The thing that the kids hate the most, is when there are more than a handful of students tied to get the cash incentive. In that case, he divides on persons prize money up among all the winning students, and sometimes they end up only getting 1 dollar or less, which pisses them off. Should I say something to this guy? I need some feedback on this. My principal is the type of guy, well, he's a narcissist. thinks everyone is out to get him and thinks what he does is the best. He has a rep of being not well liked in the district but he sees it the other way. He thinks people love him but are out to get him because he thinks hes so successful. so, I really can't talk to him. Just want peoples opinions.
Transfer to CSU w/Certificate of Achievement? I want to transfer to CSULB with a Certificate of Achievement from a community college. But what are the circumstances for that as opposed to declaring yourself as simply a transfer student? All I know is that in order to transfer, you need 60 units. And for the Certificate of Achievement, you need 18. Is that all there is to it? If you complete any courses that add up to 18 units, you automatically receive the Certificate of Achievement? Any information about transferring and the certificate can be helpful. Thanks. I'm aware there are specific courses and such that need to be completed in order to transfer. I have the information for what needs to be taken and such. I should have made my question more clear: What is the difference in just transfering as opposed to transferring with a Certificate of Achievement? If I take more than 18 transferrable units (from the CSU GE requirements), does that automatically give me the Certificate of Achievement? Or does the Certificate of Achievement have their own list of speicific courses to take?
What universities have a great film program? Right now I am a student at Los Medanos Community College and will probably get an associate degree or certificate of achievement. Please list some (not just the ones in CA) (both in USA and international).

HELP i NEED SPONSORSHIP? Hello, my name is Albert Custard Jr. and I am an eight grade student at Ellender Middle School in Marrero, Louisiana. I have been nominated to represent my school and my community at the National Young Leaders Conference in Birmingham Alabama. The Conference brings exceptional middle school and high school students from around the country to an interactive program. I have enclosed the invitation that was mailed to me for you to review. As you can see, this will be a powerful and life changing experience enabling me to interact with many prominent men and women whom most of us only see on television. Attending this conference will enable me to develop my leadership skills and reach my career goals. For me to attend the conference, I have to raise the tuition and travel expenses. I maintain a 3.8 grade point average. I am an assistant captain in Ellender Middle schools Academic Games program. I have just been inducted into the Junior National Honor Society. I have been awarded six trophies for maintaining an “A” average and I was also awarded two Superintendents awards, 12 honor roll certificates, two scholastic achievement certificates, and five perfect attendance record awards. I also have had the honor of being student of the month. My favorite accomplishment is when I was elected Mayor of a small pretend city in Delgado Community college called Exchange City. I currently work as a screen operator in the Video and Screen Ministry at Greater St. Stephens Full Gospel Baptist Church. The reason I’m asking for your help, my father is on disability. He was diagnosed with Chronic Congested Heart failure (He has an extremely low heart rate) and could not work ever again, and my mother just makes enough money to keep us going from day to day. That is why I am writing to you today. My participation in the Conference depends on whether or not I can raise enough money in sponsorship. The tuition is $1404 plus travel expenses. I was also hoping to make a little more money for my parents to come. I am hoping that you will assist me with just a small donation. My tuition must be paid no later than August 4. Your support for my sponsorship request would greatly be appreciated. If you have any questions please contact me at 504-328-2941 or e-mail me at Custard93@yahoo.com Sincerely, Albert Custard Jr. P.S. I already saved 200 dollars I just need the rest.

What could be a good excuse to get me out of something really boring? At my school, there is this thing where about 200 students are picked to get a certificate. The ceremony is 2 hours long, and I really don't want to go, but my Mum is making me. Can anyone think of a good excuse that could get me out of it. I have already said to her: "I don't want to because it is really boring" and she replied: "You should be proud of your achievements, you're going!" So, anyone got any excuses?

Low GPA, high academic achievement, how can he go to college? My 16 y/o son, who will be a senior next year, screwed up in school over the last year and a half and got several Fs (in English/literature) and a couple of Ds, effectively killing his chances to go straight to a four-year school, but he still wants to go to college. He wants to be a lawyer or an engineer. He has average/high test scores on the PSAT, he hasn't taken the SAT or ACT yet. The obvious solution is for him to go to a community college for a couple of years. I did that, so did my older son who did something similar but wasn't as advanced as my younger son (but he wasn't remedial either). We started looking at the community colleges available to us here and they don't offer courses at his level. Our local college is designed almost exclusively to get remedial students to the basic level required to start a university, vocational certificates and community education (how to use a computer, etc). The highest level classes the cc has here is algebra and chemistry, which he completed years ago. He's in honors and AP, and by the end of his senior year he will have completed calculus, physics and all of the other advanced courses. His F and D grades are all in honors classes and due to his not doing homework, not because he didn't understand. So if the community college plan is out (no classes for him to take that he hasn't previously completed) and his grades won't get him into a 4-year school, what path can he take to college? His current GPA is 3.2 at his current school, but that is only for one semester, I expect it to drop a bit after this semester's grades are in. He will also have to re-take 2 or 3 language arts classes (he may fail the current semester class). It was 3.6 (weighted)/3.5 (unweighted) at his previous school, in his freshman and junior years. As far as how "smart" he is, I agree it was/is dumb of him to not do his homework. He is not a self-starter and can be lazy (not doing assignments), but he has high academic abilities. He has been in the TAG program since 5th grade. His teachers frequently express frustration that he's capable of being a top student but doesn't put out much effort. That was okay in his old school, where they didn't allow teachers to use homework as more than 25% of any grade, but at his new school where homework is 75% of the grade it's killing him. I said above "freshman and junior years," I meant "freshman and sophomore years." Sorry.

What are my chances of getting into Princeton? [International Student] + Help with extra curricular activity? It's been my lifelong dream to get into Princeton. I've been stalking princeton.edu for the last couple of months, you could say and I was left enchanted. So that dark corner in your head where all your secret wishes are? It sprung its wings and now I am practically obsessing over it so I figured I could ask before I get my hopes up >_> I am 17, I am from a country in Europe and I am currently an exchange student residing in Iowa, USA. I guess it's useful to mention that I am here on a US Government sponsored scholarship meaning I had to complete a series of tests in order to be selected as one of the few finalists that got to come here in USA for a year. My academic background so far has been great, dare I say. Through my 8 years of education in primary school I've always had 5.00 GPA (the grading system in my country is on a 1-5 grade scale; 5 being the highest). I was also selected student of the generation, the highest recognition my primary school offered. Through my two years of high school education in my country I also maintained a 5.00 GPA. In addition my (now ex) high school is ranked 3 in the country. During those two years there are some achievements I've had that are worth mentioning (I believe): -placed first in an essay competition where the reward was a dinner with the American Ambassador in my country as well as a written certificate by the American Embassy -placed first in the national English as a second language competition -was selected to attend the traditional breakfast branch with the mayor of my town (the capital of my country); only a few schools got to send 4 students (one from each graduating class) As I've mentioned before, I am currently a senior student (even though I am technically a junior since I am 17 and I'll be required to complete one more year of high school education in order to graduate in my country) in a small town in Iowa. So far I am maintaining a 4.0 GPA. My high school here doesn't offer AP or IB classes so I am taking some dual credit college classes such as Psychology, Government, Social Problems and Human Relations. My study of focus would be the Social Studies field. I am not sure what precisely that would be but I am trying to find out by taking the College Credit classes I've listed so hopefully I'll know soon. I understand that volunteerism plays a very important role in getting admitted and therefore I complete at least 10 hours per month. I do wonder though if there are some preferred clubs or organizations I should join? Does getting involved in already laid out volunteering actions suffice or am I supposed to take the initiative to organize some kind of event? Like raising money for a certain cause, for example? I guess my question is that IF I do get 2250+ score on my SAT and score well enough on the TOEFL exam, what are my chances of getting admitted? In addition, if my main focus of study are social sciences, what are the three subject tests I should take? I was thinking world history, US history and maybe Literature or Mathematics I? Also, thanks for reading this (: I know I can get carried away with writing sometimes so kudos for getting to this part. Thanks for answering so fast and for the words of encouragement. :) I do appreciate it greatly. Regarding the Mathematics Level 1&2...what is a test curve exactly?

I am trying to fill out my CV and have few things open. I'm not sure what to put in my "profile" section and ? in the experience one. I want to give this CV to few bookstores and maybe libraries. The education and key achievements are my own, but the other sections are filled with examples. I've worked in a movie theatre for 2 years, and was promoted to a crew leader, and I also worked as a desk assistant. Don't know if a bookstore would necessarily want that experience. (section after contact info and section that starts with 2004 is the ones that i'm having a bit of a problem with; not my stuff there)... Do I have anything to worry about?. . . . . ? I am applying to many college prep schools in RI, and the application process is the same as college. These schools are searching for smart and unique students. I once asked a student who attended one of these great schools, if they had anything special while they were applying. They told me it was their grades. I have good grades and a lot to offer, such as community service hours, a youth organization that I started and now direct, letters of recommendation, I recently spoke at a college in front of students, (I am only 13 by the way), I spoke about my religion and spirituality, and I have many certificates of achievements from my school. Do you think I have anything to worry about with the application process? I am really excited and confident, yet scared a teeny bit. . . help.
What Was The Highlight Of Your Day? So today was like any other day. I checked the mail and open the letter with my name on it. Inside I read: Dear Gerald: I am pleased to inform you that based on your academic achievements and demonstrated leadership potential you are invited to represent Robert M. Shoemaker High School at the 2010 National Student Leadership Conference being held on college campuses in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, CA, Chicago IL, and New York, NY. You will be awarded an Academic Transcript, Letters of Recommendation and a Certificate of Achievement to include in your college applications. You can also earn up to three college credits from The American University. I'm freakin' excited to actually do this but kinda nervous as well. What about your day?
How can I improve my college application to get into an university? Although I am only a sophomore, I am worried about college. I want to get into a university and then go to med school. I have a 4.0GPA (weighted) and a 3.2(unweighted). Next year I am taking AP Physics, AP US History, AP Psychology, H Pre Calculus, H English 11, and Latin. What after school activities would you recommend to help me get into a school such as Duke, Chapel Hill, or Wake Forest? I have received awards such as the Duke Tip Certificate of Achievement, the Presidential Education Awards Program, am a member of the Drama club, and JCL (Junior Classical League) at our school. I have attended Duke College Scholar Weekends in the past, and took the SAT in the 7th grade. I was invited to National Student Leadership Conference. I only have 5 hours of volunteer time. What are some ways to volunteer that would look great on a college application. Also, how many hours are average? I would like to look different from the average student, while having a fun time volunteering. * I am a sophomore in high school.
Will I be able to get into Duke University? Pretty straight-forward question, I'll give you some background to help make answering it easier for you. Grade: 11 (Junior) Ethnicity: African-American Location: Canada School: Have gone to the same school for grades 10-12, one of the top public HS in Canada. Okay, I'll list some of my achievements, work experience, activities, etc: -Honour Society Member (Almost 100% chance of being an Honour Society Scholar following Grade 12 Year) -IB Certificate Student (Biology SL, Math SL, Chemistry HL, French HL) -93% overall average (we don't get GPAs here, but I only have one mark below a 90% since entering high school) - Junior Varsity Football in Grades 10 and 11 - Club (Kind of like AAU in the States) basketball since about Grade 7. - Royal Canadian Air Cadets (Corporal Rank) - Class Rank is also not available as it isn't done here, if it were I'd certainly be top 10%. - Active member of Canadian-African Cultural Association - Children's Bible Study Leader at Church - Vacation Bible School Organizer - A little bit of debate, not a significant amount at all. - Volunteer at Community Recreation Center (6 hours a week) - Referee Community Basketball Games (3 hours a week, Saturdays only) That's kind of off the top of my head, I don't have a current resume handy to be more specific and state everything that I've done. As you can see I did not list any ACT or SAT scores because I haven't completed either of them yet (did take the PSAT in Grade 9). Based on practice examinations that I've done, I'm expecting to do very well on them. I do realize that this won't allow you to make a completely accurate judgment on the likelihood of me being accepted to Duke. One last note: I'm expecting to score 7s (perfect) on my IB exams. I've wanted to go to Duke for as long as I can remember and really want to know if I've done what it takes to get there.

Am I being oversensitive? My school board recognizes 3 Grade 12 students from every school in the region every year. Either for "academic achievement" or "overcoming personal obstacles." Apparently it's chosen by people like the principal and other administration of the schools. I'm one of the chosen this year for my school. There a dinner next week at the board office and apparently we're getting some kind of certificate for "Student Recognition." And they're taking our picture for some kind of newsletter. My parents are proud of it, and apparently the principal herself is going there so I have to go. Thing is, I know the other two choosen from my school, they get higher marks then me. They're both in the mid-nintey averages. I'm low to mid eighties, and I did get on the honour role last semester of Grade 11 but I stil feel lke that was dumb luck. And I don't know what I want to do with my life while the other two have both applied to high-end universities. (I'm going to college first when I finally decide something, then I want to bridge over if need be.) Even my parents think I'm getting it because of my disability and high marks because of the "overcoming obstacles" line. But I don't feel that's right, especially sense I know the other two get around 10% higher marks then me, and there are a few others like that as well, don't they deserve anything? I don't really feel like I want to be recgonized for my disability and marks that are just decent by comparison to the other two, and a handful of others at our school that don't get anything even though they do better then me. Am I just over-thinking it or something? Or is it wrong just to get something because of my leg CP like I feel I am?
What are my chances of getting into UGA (University of Georgia) based on my stats? Okay, so I've always wanted to go to UGA...even since I discovered there were post secondary options. That was around when I was very, very young. Elementary, perhaps, when I first heard of the school. I want to go badly, and applications are starting soon...so here's my stats...what do you think? GPA: 3.5 SAT (Critical Reading + Math): 990/1600 ACT: 24 AP Classes: AP Literature, AP US History, AP Biology, AP Language (My school just started offering AP last year) Extracurricular activities: FFA, Beta (I'm an officer), International Club, Student Government Achievements: Won 2nd place in state for FFA science fair for natural sciences Race: Caucasian (However, my dad is 100% Cherokee Indian, as it says on his birth certificate [Native American] so I don't get it.) Gender: Male Distance from UGA: 21 miles I put everything I could think of, even things I'd consider telling them...what do you think? Are my chances at least sort of good? Good answer, tpopluar. Brings Light...WHY cap THINGS that DON'T need to be like you KNOW me or something. Good JOB on that one PRAT. So annoying. As an extended detail, I'm in the Top 25% of my class I think, very, very close to top 10% Also, as for community service hours, I don't have alot, but I'm working on it...over the last two years or so, I'd say I've done about 20-30 hours. Maybe more. I know I've done quite a bit with my SAE, and I've done quite a bit for Beta...also, going to be doing some more this year with student government.
Who could help me revise my personal statement? This is a personal statement for applying to the UC. It is very important. Can you help me revise the sentences and grammars? I would appreciate it! I am a typical Chinese new generation. I love sports, especially basketball. I had won numerous sports competition prizes during my schools. I summarize myself as an ambitious young man who is making progress and who is willing to contribute to the society. My life can be characterized by three transitions. I passed into a Key Middle School in China. I enjoyed the study and sense of achievement through competition. With my outstanding academic performance, I was recommended for admission to the high school; it was the highest academic honor for a Chinese student. The first transition occurred in high school; I found the study was getting dull gradually, and I wondered why I hit the books through the night and morning. I was tired of this and wanted to drop out to start my own business, but I couldn’t; on one side, education seemed the only way out for me in Chinese doctrine; on the other side, I was under the pressure from both the school and family; I had used to be the best student, so they all placed high expectations on me; therefore, I was on the horns of a dilemma; confusion and depression were writhing around my heart; this was my toughest time. However, under the constant enlightenments by my families and teachers, I realized education was the basic for anyone who wanted to do great things, so I held on to graduation. Afterwards, I was assigned to a 2-year vocational college with no other option, and I experienced the second transition. Although I still wasn't interested in the outmoded teaching style, I wasn't as depressed as in high school because I realized I couldn’t change the circumstances but could change myself. I shift my focus to social activities. I studied economics by paying close attention to it and by doing some internship; I acquired some certificates of English skills by self-study; I started my housing business by subleasing apartments to people who needed short-term lease. This was a harvest time. After college, I took various jobs: salesman, foreign trade merchandiser, and marketing manager. Mostly, I established a successful online store. Although I had left it for quite a while, I still felt it was like my child because we had experienced too much which could only be known and understood by myself; the third transition was derived from it. After half-a-year operation, I realized an online store could not be my destination, I needed to explore a higher space and self, and the best way was further education. Although I had earned much money, one thing never left my mind: doing good things. Money is important, but I want to contribute to the society even more. I believe in “more power, more ability”. I hired needy classmates to my business, and they are still working there regardless of the financial crisis; I donated to the earthquake and charities; when I am in DVC, I took money from my own pocket and built a website (http://www.dvchelp.com/) where student can ask and answer questions regarding their academic and social life. Although I didn’t get support from school and encountered some technical barriers, I never gave up, because the virtuous nature of it encourages me to cling on to it. I am now more aware of what I am doing than ever before, so I regained my academic summit getting perfect GPA in DVC. I pursue the best education because this will push me to a higher level at which I would be able to do some great things in the future.
I love working with children and i don't want to stay in school forever. Is this a waste of my time? I am a student at City college of san francsico yeah... i love children and im plannign to get a Associate of Arts Degree and Award of Achievement in Child development plus work on getting a Associate teacher permit and some other related certificates. Difference between American and Australian schools, difference in the schools' learning systems? I'm 15 and in Year 10, I currently live in Australia and my family is considering about a move soon to the US (possibly around New Year). You don't need to tell about the migration process, we're sponsored and if we offer the deal, we'll be able to move. I at least know there's a different learning system in every country, and I would like to know as much as possible the difference between Australia and America's learning systems. 1. Tell me about school (So there's elementary, high school and college, right? And then University?) 2. Are students ahead in Maths? (I'm just so curious) 3. How often are students given assignments/exams? 4. Do you have anything similar to a School Certificate? (The School Certificate is awarded to eligible students at the end of Year 10. It prepares students for success in HSC study, training and apprenticeships or in the workplace. It also provides a detailed picture of a student’s strengths and achievements at the end of Year 10 of schooling. - Board of Studies website) 5. Instead of HSC, American students do the SAT? (HSC is Higher School Certificate. Similar to SC but it is the completion of senior year) 6. In Australia, I start my new year (e.g. Year 10) and finish the end of it at the end of the year. You have what you call something mid-term? You start your new year half through the year...and then you're given a break during New Year for some time, then you resume to the same year? (sorry that sounded confusing. but just read it a few more times) 7. I'm in Year 10 currently, will I most likely enter Year 11 or repeat Year 10 again when the year starts? 8. You have a long school holiday called summer break? Tell me about school holidays and if there are any other breaks during the year. 9. Do you get to choose any subjects you want to learn? Or does it depend on which year you are in? Tell me in general what America is like. I'll most likely move to Houston, what are the students like over there? Thanks. WHEW! That's a lot to ask but anser the ones you can, much appreciated.

Can you edit my one pager for 10 points? Honor Roll students get quite a few privileges at the dorms, but none of those privileges motivate the students to continue working harder. Students in good academic standings are not required to study during study hours, and they can be anywhere in the dorm during study hall. Many students work hard to get that advantage, but this advantage doesn’t work very well, because most students end up with low scores the following semester. This is the time to change this policy and introduce new rules! Most schools have “class ranking” system, and the top students from each class are posted on a board. This system works very well and more and more students try hard to get their names up on the list of “top students”. Students will work hard to get up on the list and will continue working hard to improve and hold their position up on the board. We can do justice to the students who are taking AP classes by not calculating their score or multiplying their score by a number which will make it equivalent to an Accelerated class. For Example, 85 * 1.1 = 93. We should also have “Certificates of Recognition” for the students scoring more than 85% each semester. This certificate will definitely encourage students to continue working hard and will boost their confidence. The students who cannot make it to the top ten will not lose heart and their hard work will not be wasted. This certificate will be written proof of their academic achievements. Practice doesn’t become “optional” for athletes who win races, hence study hall should remain a requirement for all students throughout the year. Furthermore, money prizes should be considered for top ranking students. I want to add thesis statement to the first paragraph. I also want to develop my conclusion and add some stuff, such as subway discount cards or other stuff for honor roll students. The main thing i am looking is for status error, grammar, and punctuation mistakes. Thanks for helping!

Should I be JEALOUS of these two people? Hi. I know I should NOT be but for some reason I am a bit. Please advise me about this. Okay, so there are these two cousins of mine who have been my nemesis for years. Long story short, they hate the fact that I keep pushing going to college on them even though they're obviously underachievers and choose to hate school and doesn't believe in college. And they're these kind of people who goes to strip bars or clubs and just get drunk while I'm a reserved and always sitting in the corner whenever there's a family party. Anyway, both of them seem to be braggin about their so-called achievement for 'graduating' from a bartending school when they actually simply got a certificate from attending a two week training. Meanwhile, I don't get why I should feel jealous myself for the reason that I am college student with GPA close to honors status and only 48 units away from earning my bachelors in chemistry. They're cousins as well and bestfriend and I'm like the third wheel if you think about it. They both now have bartending jobs from getting a 2 week training while I am a 21 yr old with no offical job experience whatsoever and has finished 3 years of college so far....What do you think? I am not saying having a career as a bartender is bad or anything but do you think they have the right to think that their current career right now is something I should be jealous about? PS: My career goal is to become a crime scene analyst...which is why I am majoring in chemistry (an working on an AA in criminal justice). They're in the same age group as I am....22 and 23.
Deferred from college... writing them a letter... what do you think...? Dear University of Connecticut Admissions Office: I recently received a letter in the mail stating that a decision on my application has been deferred until mid-April. It probably is no surprise that this letter came as a disappointment to me, as UConn is one of the colleges that I am most excited about. I hope that my senior year achievements will help my chances of being accepted. My high school has been a great place for me to learn, lead, and achieve greatness. As my application stated, I started one of the most profitable charity events at my school and I am continuing to do my best inside and outside of the classroom. As always, my grades are my number one priority, as I am not a victim of “senioritis.” Here are some of my accomplishments from senior year: •Honor Roll 1st and 2nd Marking Periods (Enrolled in A.P. Spanish, Honors Calculus, Honors Humanities, and more) •Advancing to the state tournament for D.E.C.A. (Business marketing competition) after earning 2nd place in the QuickServe Restaurant Management section. •Completed a 150 hour paid internship as a part of the Wall Business and Finance Academy. •Voted “Most Responsible” student as a part of the Senior Superlative elections. Please feel free to contact me to request more information, including detailed report cards, additional letters of recommendations, certificates, newspaper articles, and more if it can provide assistance in a decision on my case. After visiting the Storrs campus in August and taking a tour with Jill and Sonique, attending an informational session with Ms. Norris, as well as speaking to alumni and present students, I feel that the University of Connecticut would be a great fit for me. Thank you for this second chance, and I look forward to our future communication. Sincerely, please feel free to be as positive or as harsh as you wish... i would like to get accepted to this school, so this letter needs to be good. thanks!!!

i need help on my admission essay? deadline is on dec 11, so i'll need to get this ready at least by dec 7 or something. it's a requirement for applying for a slot in the Ateneo Junior Summer Seminar, and i really want to join. please help me edit my essay...you can tell me which paragraphs i'd better omit, details i should include etc. btw, it's unfinished. i don't know what i should write as an extro or conclusion. it's about why the committee should choose me to represent my school in the AJSS. tell me if it sucks, because i have no experience whatsoever about these things. :)) anyway here goes: As long as facts or records are concerned, I'm just your average junior schoolgirl who takes her studies seriously but doesn't exactly stand out. But there's much more to me than my report card or the awards and certificates I receive; there is no room in the application form for dreams, aspirations, and attitude. These are what make up my character; these highlight me from the backdrop of the crowd. I dream of being successful when I grow up (who doesn't?). What exactly I'd like to be, though, is what I'm not yet sure of. When I was younger I wanted to be a lawyer, armed with books, brandishing a suitcase in court. Now, I'm not so sure. I have taken interest in a lot of things, like literature, music, psychology and math, and I don’t know which one I'd like to pursue, hence my indecision about the course I will take in college. That aside, for now I'm focusing on maximizing my potential by taking on challenges. By that, I don't necessarily mean joining contests. I mean the simple kind of challenges wherein my opponent is myself. I like the sense of achievement when I succeed or the feeling of having learned something when I fail. In this frame of mind, I dare myself to read Shakespeare, I do Kumon Math (where I'm now learning advanced math without a tutor), and I try to learn a foreign language with the help of phrasebooks and online resources. I see the AJSS as a great opportunity I can benefit a lot from if I'm accepted. And especially since it will be held during summer vacation, a time when I'm idle and when development is almost stagnant. I'll admit, though, that this is my first time to be willing to give up five weeks of summer to study. Actually, 'willing' might be too weak a word for it; I've already decided that if I can't participate in the seminar, I will take free college courses online. Having said that, I’m still, in part, a typical teenager. I love my family and friends, anime, music and the Internet. Music, in particular, is a large part of my life; I play the piano and the guitar, and there is not a day in which I fail to either blast tunes from my loudspeakers at home. In school during recess, I am usually seen with a cell phone in my hand and earphones plugged into my ears. I'm not much of a social butterfly, but I do get along well with everyone, whether it's at school, in church, or anywhere else. I enjoy making friends, and if I get to join AJSS, I'll be acquainted with dozens of honor students whom I'll get to know more of as the weeks pass; a great experience for sure. *unfinished*

I feel partial to it, without ever visiting it. I have been to hundreds of college websites, but none held the same warmth that W&M's did: the shades of green; the welcoming campus scenery; the stimulating thoughts of engaging, profound discussions with fellow passionate students. I have always been educated in small schools, and W&M is very much the environment I yearn for. I am politically leaned to the left, enjoy an abundance of community involvement, and would truly enjoy four years in a place that appears to be the ideal opposite of distracting, anti-scholar Miami. I dream of a place that would embrace me for being passionate, creative, over-achieving, and involved, rather than deem me as being "too intense." I dream of William & Mary.

Please Help I need sponsorship? P.S I already saved 200 dollars I just need the rest.

What do you think of the following article? EXTRA HELP When Special Education Goes Too Easy on Students Parents Say Schools Game System, Let Kids Graduate Without Skills By JOHN HECHINGER and DANIEL GOLDEN August 21, 2007; Page A1 GREENPORT, N.Y. -- On June 25, 2006, Michael Bredemeyer threw his tasseled cap in the air and cheered after getting his high school diploma. Two days later, his parents mailed the diploma back. [More Data on Mainstreaming] * * * Plus, read more about the challenges of integrating special-needs students, at WSJ.com/Mainstreaming. Michael, now 19 years old, has learning disabilities and finished high school at a seventh-grade reading level, despite scoring above average on IQ tests. The Bredemeyers say he passed some classes because teachers inflated his grades and accepted poor work. By awarding him a meaningless diploma, they say, school officials avoided paying for ongoing instruction. "I felt proud because he had worked so hard," says Michael's mother, Beverly, her voice breaking. "You don't want to take that away from him. But you knew it wasn't real. What's he going to do in the future? Will he be able to go to college and get a job?" The Bredemeyers represent a new voice in special education: parents disappointed not because their children are failing, but because they're passing without learning. These families complain that schools give their children an easy academic ride through regular-education classes, undermining a new era of higher expectations for the 14% of U.S. students who are in special education. Years ago, schools assumed that students with disabilities would lag behind their non-disabled peers. They often were taught in separate buildings and left out of standardized testing. But a combination of two federal laws, adopted a quarter-century apart, have made it national policy to hold almost all children with disabilities to the same academic standards as other students. The 1975 statute now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act promoted putting special-education students in mainstream classrooms. The 2001 No Child Left Behind Act said schools would be punished if disabled children don't pass the same state tests as other students. It also requires states to set standards for high-school graduation rates and meet them for all students, including those with disabilities. By some measures, the extra attention is paying off. Test scores and classroom grades of disabled students are rising, and their high-school graduation rate increased to 54% in 2004 from 42% in 1996. But critics say some of the gains have come because schools have learned to game the system. For instance, federal rules allow states to make "reasonable accommodations" to help disabled students pass tests and graduate, such as allowing extra time on exams. Some schools, say critics, are giving students too much help, for instance by guiding students to the right answers on multiple-choice tests. MAKING THE GRADE • The Issue: Some parents of students with learning disabilities say their children are graduating too easily. • The Background: Federal laws raised school standards, but left loopholes. Increasingly, special-education students get special help to pass tests. • The Problem: If schools game the system, those students move on without the skills they need. From 2000 to 2005, special-education fourth graders showed more improvement in reading and math than the general population on an important benchmark test, the National Assessment of Educational Progress. But accommodations also increased. In 2005, 70% of fourth-grade special education students received some sort of accommodation while taking the math portion, up from 44% five years earlier. In reading, 63% used accommodations in 2005, up from 29% in 2000. On tests used to measure compliance with No Child Left Behind, more states are permitting students with disabilities to use calculators on arithmetic tests or have reading-comprehension tests be read aloud. Massachusetts education commissioner David Driscoll warned school administrators in February that an alarming number of special education students -- a quarter or half in some cases -- were receiving such accommodations on state exams. With unclear guidelines, "People start driving trucks through loopholes," he said in an interview. Some school districts have an informal policy against failing students with disabilities even if they miss many classes or aren't learning. "I can go into any school we represent and have somebody tell me we have to pass special education students" to avoid being blamed for not providing the right services if students fail, says Janet Horton, a Texas special-education attorney. Federal law says special-education students should receive a "free appropriate public education," but it doesn't prohibit failing them. Mardys Leeper and Carol Merrill, former teachers at West Philadelphia High School in Pennsylvania, say a special-education administrator there ordered them to pass special-education students. Ms. Leeper says she made concessions for students with disabilities, such as letting them write shorter essays or copy paragraphs she wrote onto a word processor rather than composing their own. But when those students didn't make an effort, or skipped class, both teachers say they sometimes sought to fail them -- only to have the administrator insist on passing grades. The reason they were given: Students had met the goals of their federally mandated individual education plans, IEPs, spelling out goals and services for each special-education student. "Students who weren't even participating, even trying, we couldn't fail them," says Ms. Merrill, an English teacher who retired this year. Even if they couldn't read, "I had to give them a 'D.'" The administrator couldn't be reached for comment. Brenda Taylor, head of special education for the Philadelphia school district, called the matter a "breakdown in communication." The district has no written policy against failing special-education students, she says. But rather than being "punitive" if a student performs poorly or cuts class, she says, the district prefers to revise a student's IEP. "We're not in the business of failing students," Ms. Taylor says. Only 19 states require all students to earn the same kind of diploma, according to a recent University of Minnesota survey. Some of those states let special-education students amass fewer course credits to earn the degree, the survey found. Other states give substitute certificates, in some cases called IEP diplomas, to special-education students who don't qualify for standard diplomas. Many special-education parents are happy to see their children advance through school and graduate. Reggie Felton, director of federal policy for the National School Boards Association, says special-education students learn more in regular classes even if they're given a break on assignments or grading. The federal government recently decided to triple the percentage of students allowed to take easier tests, to 3% from 1%. Some legislators have proposed exempting more students. But the rebellion against too-easy passing is growing, says Pam Wright, who with her husband has co-authored books on special education issues and operates a Virginia-based information clearinghouse for special-education parents. She estimates she now receives more than 1,000 email messages a year from parents lamenting that their children with disabilities take mainstream courses but aren't being taught as much as their classmates. Dozens of parents have contended in recent administrative appeals that their children did not deserve the diplomas they received, she says. The family of Alba Somoza, who has cerebral palsy and speaks only with the help of a computer, filed one such case. Alba drew national attention in the 1990s when her family successfully pushed to include the then-third grader in a regular classroom. Then-President Bill Clinton backed her cause, and Alba, now 23, graduated with honors from a New York City high school in 2002. Last year, Alba and her family filed an administrative case claiming her education was a sham. A school report prepared weeks before she graduated showed she had language and math skills at an elementary school level, court records show. "You cannot shunt children through -- you cannot scam them through the system," says Alba's mother, Mary. [Michael Bredemeyer] Since shortly after she graduated, New York has been paying for a special program for Alba that costs $400,000 a year -- including a full-time teacher, an aide, transportation and extensive technology. The city says it is doing so out of compassion, not legal obligation. The family is seeking to continue the public funding another year to help Alba receive enough education to work as a museum docent. The Somozas lost the administrative case, but a judge in U.S. District Court in Manhattan ruled in the family's favor earlier this year and ordered another hearing. Rather than develop a program that would help Alba reach her academic goals, teachers lowered the curriculum's "level of difficulty" and removed "large and meaningful portions of its substantive content," the judge said. One teacher testified that he did most of the work on Alba's final project in 2002. New York officials say the school properly adapted the curriculum for a severely disabled student. In northern California, Jennifer McGowan, an 18-year-old who is deaf in one ear and suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities, was supposed to graduate from Vacaville Unified School District in June. She didn't get her diploma -- because her family won a court injunction to stop it. In an interview, Jennifer said she often received A or B grades for poorly completed work or, at times, when she didn't do assignments at all or show up for class. Achievement tests she took in January 2005 showed that she had the math and reading skills of an elementary-school student, according to her administrative complaint. The school district denies her grades were inflated and said she showed her proficiency by passing a high-school exit exam. John Aycock, Vacaville's superintendent, said teachers did "a great job working with Jennifer." Jennifer says she failed the exit exam several times despite intensive preparation. "They just wanted to pass me and let me fly by," she says. The school system says it's not unusual to make several attempts to pass. At the Mercer Island school district in Washington state, the family of a girl with severe learning disabilities complains that, instead of the intense instruction she needed to master reading and math in eighth and ninth grades, teachers showered her with accommodations: a peer note-taker, a peer to read materials to her, oral exams, reduced assignments and a calculator on math tests. At an administrative hearing, the family -- whose names are not disclosed in the court papers -- sought to force the school system to pay for her private schooling. Noting her strong A and B grades, the district successfully argued that accommodations were helping her learn. In U.S. District Court in Seattle, a judge hearing an appeal of the case disagreed last year, saying the system improperly relied on accommodations rather than instruction, and has returned the case to a hearing officer to determine financial relief for the family. Boxes of school correspondence and Michael Bredemeyer's old tests and assignments line the hallways of his family's weather-beaten saltbox house in Orient, N.Y., on Long Island's North Fork. Michael's parents are demanding public funding for more services until age 21, to which students are entitled unless they graduate, so he can improve his academic skills for college. John Bredemeyer, a county public-health inspector, and his wife, Beverly, had high hopes for Michael, who has a strong work ethic and a knack for repairing machines. But once he entered public middle school in nearby Greenport, his parents worried that teachers were letting him skate through classes and tests. Michael, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities including dyslexia, says in some classes he "definitely earned" a passing grade, but others were "borderline." He took regular classes except for one period a day. "A little more one-on-one" instruction would have helped, he says. On state achievement exams, Michael's IEP permitted him extra time, simplified instructions and guidance from a teacher to slow him down if he rushed through answers. But when he completed the eighth-grade math test, his special-education teacher also took him to the resource room and directed him to redo problems he had answered incorrectly. According to a memo from Greenport Superintendent Charles Kozora, the teacher "exceeded the intent" of Michael's accommodations, boosting his score. The state investigated and invalidated Michael's test. [Revolt] Mr. Kozora said the school system had only two cases of testing irregularities in six years, few conflicts with parents over special education and "many successes" among students with disabilities. The district says achievement, and not cost, dictates its decisions on graduating students. When Michael was a junior at Greenport High, his chemistry teacher passed him with the minimum grade of 65, even though he says he spent much of the class doodling and playing solitaire on his laptop. Checking his assignments and tests, his parents couldn't understand how he could be passing. In a letter, the school principal acknowledged that the final grade was a "miscalculation" and should have been 56.6, or an F. The school offered to let him make up his lost credits by volunteering in the town library. When his parents balked, he was instead placed in courses in sociology and psychology. On one psychology pop quiz, five of Michael's seven answers were marked wrong, but a failing grade was crossed out on the paper and a passing score of 65 was substituted. The school district declined comment. For a senior English assignment, he received an A for one untitled paragraph. "I believe competition today has changed dramatically," he wrote. "Back in the day, sports was some of the only sports that had competition. Today, everyone wants to compete and only be successful. School work, school sports, major league sports, all involve high amounts of success and competition. Competition today has become very extreme." His English teacher, Michael Connolly, said he didn't remember the assignment and had no comment on the grade. On standardized tests, Michael had mixed results: On the SATs, which have a 200 to 800 scale, Michael received 330 and then 370 in two tries on the reading test, in the bottom 10% of all students nationally. On math, he scored 460 both times. He failed two state exams and passed five others. His school grades put him in the bottom one-third of his class. A month before graduation, the Bredemeyers debated whether he should accept the degree. "I wanted to have it," Michael says. "Get it and forget it." On graduation day, a school band played "Pomp and Circumstance." Michael's parents, his sister, his grandmother, aunts and uncles watched as he walked up to the podium and a school official handed him a purple diploma case with his name etched in gold letters. Michael says he knew his parents might not let him keep it. "I had a feeling they'd do something like that," he said, shrugging. "I'll eventually get it back, one of these days, months, years." This summer, Michael has been mowing lawns and picking up trash at a state park for $9 an hour. This fall, he plans to enter his second year at Suffolk County Community College, which does not require a high-school diploma. Last semester at Suffolk, he received a D-plus in freshman composition, D's in statistics and Western Civilization and an F in the history of rock 'n' roll.
